How to Create Call Scripts

Good scripts give volunteers confidence and ensure consistent messaging. They should guide the conversation while allowing for natural dialogue.

The Script Manager lets you create and organize all your call scripts

What you'll need

• Admin or Manager role on the campaign

• Key campaign messages

• Common questions and answers

Creating a Script

Open Script Manager

Go to Phone Bank → Scripts and click Create Script.

Name Your Script

Use a descriptive name: "ID Calls - General", "GOTV Supporters", "Persuasion - Healthcare".

Write the Introduction

The opening should:

• Identify the caller and campaign

• Be brief (under 15 seconds)

• Ask if it's a good time

"Hi, is this {first_name}? I'm [Volunteer Name] calling on behalf of [Candidate]. Do you have a moment to talk about the upcoming election?"

Add the Main Message

Include your core ask and key talking points:

• What are you asking them to do? (vote, volunteer, donate)

• Top 2-3 reasons to support your candidate

• What makes this election important

Build your script section by section in the editor

Include Survey Questions

Questions to capture voter information:

• "Can we count on your vote for [Candidate]?" (ID question)

• "What issues are most important to you?"

• "Would you like to volunteer for the campaign?"

Write Response Branches

Create different paths based on their answers:

• If supporter: Thank them, ask about volunteering

• If undecided: Address their concerns, share key points

• If opposed: Thank them for their time, end politely

Add the Closing

End every call professionally:

• Thank them for their time

• Remind them of election date

• Provide contact info if they have questions

Keep It Conversational

Scripts are guides, not word-for-word reading. Encourage volunteers to be natural and respond to what voters say.

Script Best Practices

Length

• Full script: 45-90 seconds

• Keep each section scannable

• Use bullet points, not paragraphs

Tone

• Friendly and conversational

• Avoid jargon or policy-speak

• Match your candidate's voice

Testing

• Have team members test the script

• Time how long calls take

• Update based on feedback
