Pulsar for advocacy groups

Pulsar gives an advocacy group one place for members, email, events and a campaign plan. Set the account up as a 501(c)(4), a 501(c)(6) or a coalition, and goals, texting registration and donor notices follow that choice.

Who this fits

  • 501(c)(4) social welfare groups running issue campaigns.
  • 501(c)(6) trade and business associations organizing members around policy.
  • Coalitions of member organizations working toward one goal.

Works today

  • Set up as a 501(c)(4), 501(c)(6) or coalition: Choose your type at setup and enter your EIN. Pulsar checks it against IRS tax-exempt organization records.
  • Goals counted in actions and members: A 501(c)(4) counts advocacy actions and members. A 501(c)(6) counts members and policy wins. A coalition counts member organizations recruited.
  • Contacts, email and events: Import members as CSV, segment them, send email from paid plans, and post events and volunteer shifts on ActionGrid.
  • Voter data and district targeting: Paid plans include voter data in California, North Carolina and Ohio, so you can find supporters by district.

Rolling out

  • Texting registration that starts from your type: The texting setup files a 501(c)(4), 501(c)(6) or coalition as a mixed use case for 10DLC carrier registration and does not ask for a Campaign Verify token.
  • Donations with the right notice: On Kyndara donation pages, a gift to a 501(c)(4) or 501(c)(6) skips the FEC questions and carries the notice that it is not deductible as a charitable contribution.

Not live yet

  • Email-your-official pages are rolling out and are not live yet. There are no patch-through calls to legislators.
  • There is no bill tracking.
  • Petition pages are rolling out and are not live yet.

Which plan

One issue campaign usually fits Grassroots or Momentum. A group running several campaigns, or a coalition, fits Movement or Coalition, which hold several campaigns.

Questions

Does Pulsar send letters to legislators?
No. Pulsar does not have legislator targeting or letter tools. If that is your main need, a dedicated advocacy tool fits better.
Do volunteers need a paid seat?
No. Volunteers sign up on ActionGrid with their own free account. Team members are the staff who work in Pulsar itself.
