How to Use Tags for Contact Organization

Tags help you organize contacts into flexible groups for targeted outreach. Unlike filters, tags persist on contact records and can be used across all Pulsar features.

Tags on a contact record for flexible categorization

Understanding Tags

Tags are labels you attach to contacts to group them by any criteria:

• Event attendance - "Rally 2024", "Fundraiser Gala"

• Volunteer roles - "Canvasser", "Phone Banker", "Driver"

• Issue interests - "Climate", "Healthcare", "Education"

• Geography - "North District", "Downtown"

• Campaign actions - "Yard Sign", "Host Event", "Endorser"

Tags vs. Fields

Use tags for flexible categorization that may change. Use fields for permanent data like address or phone number.

Creating Tags

Access Tag Management

Go to Settings → Tags to view and manage all tags.

Create a New Tag

Click Create Tag, enter a name, and optionally choose a color for easy identification.

Tag Naming Conventions

Use consistent naming like "Event: Rally 2024" or "Issue: Climate" to keep tags organized as your list grows.

Applying Tags

Tag Individual Contacts

Open Contact Details

Click on any contact to open their detail view.

Add Tags

In the Tags section, click Add Tag and select from existing tags or create a new one.

Bulk Tag Application

Select Contacts

Use checkboxes to select multiple contacts, or use Select All for the current view.

Apply Bulk Action

Click Bulk Actions → Add Tags, then select tags to apply.

Using Tags for Outreach

Tags integrate with all Pulsar communication tools:

• Email Campaigns - Send to contacts with specific tags

• SMS Campaigns - Text only tagged groups

• Walk Lists - Create canvass lists from tagged contacts

• Phone Banking - Call lists based on tags

Tag Limits

While there's no limit to how many tags you can create, contacts can have up to 50 tags each. Use tags strategically to avoid overwhelming complexity.

Managing Tags

Edit Tag Names

Go to Settings → Tags, click the tag, and update its name. Changes apply to all contacts with that tag.

Delete Tags

Deleting a tag removes it from all contacts. This action cannot be undone.

Merge Tags

Consolidate similar tags by selecting multiple tags and choosing "Merge" to combine them into one.

Troubleshooting

Can't find a tag

Use the search box in tag management. Tags are also case-insensitive.

Refresh the page. If the issue persists, check if you have permission to edit contacts.
